3/28. In happy contrast to the central part of the state, the west coast of Florida offers some genuinely nice riding. Route 19 takes you up the Gulf through towns with names like Chassahowitzka and Homosassa Springs. I stopped for a very good barbeque meal in Chiefland, then stayed on Rte 98 all along the western part of the state. That was a pretty ride, with nice views of the Gulf on my left and the Apalachicola National Forest on my right.
Owing to Spring Break there were no cheap rooms to be had in Panama City, or Santa Monica either, which for that matter I'd always somehow pictured with a lot more bikinis per square mile than I actually saw (0), so I spent the night in DeFuniak Springs, just down the road from the town of--wait for it--Eucheeanna.
