Hachimantai, with the slopes of Mt. Iwate (2041 m., 6696 ft--I climbed it later on another outing) behind us. Someone at Sasaki's coffee shop gave me an incredibly cool map of the place. It's in blazing full color, showing all the elevation changes, and it's printed on a sheet of thin, sturdy, waterproof plastic. In 1986 that was just the coolest thing!
