Steps up through a dense forest to Muro-ji, a temple of esoteric Buddhism in remote Nara Prefecture. My notes show I was here on 2/19/87. It took three hours to ride there from Kyoto...but this is one of my favorite temples in Japan. It was built far away from the city on purpose. It *feels* mysterious and contemplative. I visited it because it was built sometime around 800 AD and was too far away to be burnt down during all the fighting, so it remains a good example of early Heian-period architecture.
