Day 4, Tuesday 6/28: Sandbridge to Wanchese, NC
We left the terrific hospitality of Sandbridge pondering how soon we could return, and took some back roads to get to the Outer Banks. Weather windy, sunny and hot, changing to light rain later. We got set up at our campground, The Refuge, by midafternoon, and were ready to explore.
The routine is because I work in the mornings, so Lisa bikes or explores. If it's a day when we're going to move, I get the rig sorta set up in the morning, then around noon we start breaking down. The longest part of this operation is unavoidably loading and tying down the bike. We're trimming time by finding little efficiencies, but at this point it probably still takes us about an hour to be ready to go.
Our campsite is by a nice little pond, near the towns of Manteo (cute waterfront) and Wanchese (interesting Seafood Industrial Park). There's a well-stocked hardware store and a well-stocked gas station/convenience store right next door.
We took the Tiger down Rt. 12 deep into the OBX. Here's Lisa at Pea Island Nat'l Wildlife Refuge. It was hot! We left our helmets and jackets in the bike's saddlebags so we could walk around.
